Bronx animal shelter seeks help in renovating new home

THE BRONX -

A Bronx animal shelter is getting a fresh start after falling into the red on rent payments, but their work isn't done yet.

New Beginnings Animal Shelter, the Bronx's only no-kill animal shelter, was at risk of closing before a donor stepped in and purchased a two-family property on Bronxdale Avenue.

The donor paid nearly $900,000 for the home, according to shelter employees.

But with a permanent home, the shelter's new task is to convert the rundown home into a sanctuary while animals wait at the organization's current location of Newbold Avenue.

In order to make the changes necessary, New Beginnings is seeking the public's help in raising $350,000.

"It's a lot of work, but in the end it's gonna pay off," says New Beginnings' Pedro Rosario. "Because it's a new home for them, it's a new beginning, you know, like the name."
