Princeton officials are asking for additional pedestrian safety measure at one intersection in town after a woman was struck and killed by a cement truck last month.
It’s called “pedestrian scramble,” and officials say that they would like to see it installed at the busy intersection of Washington Road and Nassau Street. This is where the woman was killed.
“Pedestrian scramble” allows pedestrians to cross the street while all traffic stops. This way no one is crossing while vehicles are attempting to move.
Princeton already has the system in place in other sections of town, including at the intersection of routes 27 and 206.
Nassau Street is part of Route 27, which is controlled by the state. It would be up to lawmakers in Trenton to make any changes to the intersection safety systems.
A spokesperson for the New Jersey Department of Transportation tells News 12 New Jersey that safety improvements were added to the intersection in the summer of 2016. The spokesperson says that the DOT’s responsibility is to keep people safe while also not increasing congestion and gridlock through busy parts of town.
