Bronx students create community crime map
Posted: Updated:Students in the Bronx have created a community crime map in order to help police and their neighbors.
Students from the Sonia Sotomayor Community Center on Rosedale Avenue say the map tracks homelessness, poverty, misuse of land and crime in their neighborhood.
The students looked for ways to protect their community and decided to create a map.
"They can use the extra help to find out, and we can use their help as well," Tyrell wright, a student, says.
The map started out on paper when students witnessed incidents at certain locations they would write them down.
However, with the help of Phipps Neighborhoods, the organization that runs the community center, students in the youth group created a website.
Community members who see suspicious activity can head right to the student's website and enter an anonymous tip.
They say every time a tip is submitted, community watch does an investigation, labels it in their computer, and presents the findings to the 43rd precinct.
Students will be presenting their finished site to the community and police in December.
