Dozens of New Jersey residents got their hands dirty Sunday as part of a global effort to clean up local communities.

Volunteers with the World Mission Society Church of God worked together to clean up Elizabeth River Park as part of the “Mother’s Street” movement, which works to cleanup neighborhood parks and streets. Similar cleanups were held in more than 175 countries around the world.

“So when we do cleanups, we are not only cleaning our environment but also cleaning our souls,” said volunteer Jennifer Anton, of Mountainside.

This group, however, tells News 12 that they try to do at least one effort per month in New Jersey. They say they hold blood drives and more recently have begun collecting food for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.

News 12 is told the volunteer group also gathered for cleanup efforts in other parts of New Jersey including Passaic, Paterson and Clifton.
