Fire causes heavy damage to 3 Knox Place apartments

Firefighters responded to a four-alarm apartment fire early Wednesday morning at a Knox Place apartment building.
Firefighters say the fire started on the top floor of the six-floor building and spread to three different apartments at 4:30 a.m. One tenant says she heard crackling on the roof and then smelled smoke before dialing 911.
Those three apartments are heavily damaged. The fire forced 35 people out of their homes.
Fire officials say the cause of the fire was accidental and electrical. They say there were smoke alarms but they weren't working.
No injuries have been reported, and that is one thing tenants are grateful for.
A mother along with her 5-year-old child and a newborn were among the tenants who had to abandon their homes.
The Red Cross is assisting displaced tenants with temporary lodging. They are being told that a building inspection needs to be done to make sure the structure is stable before they are allowed back into the building to check on their belongings.
