Some tenants salvage belongings after deadly Belmont fire

BELMONT -

Some tenants are beginning to return home after a fire in Belmont last week killed a dozen people.

Tenants were allowed to re-enter the building Tuesday to salvage some of their belongings, lining up in the cold to be let in one by one. Officials say it could be days before it's safe enough to let everyone back inside.

As News 12 has reported, officials say the inferno broke out Thursday on Prospect Avenue after a child was playing with a stove. The blaze ripped through the building, with the stairwell acting like a chimney, shooting flames throughout the floors and trapping people inside.

A total of 12 people were killed, including four children. Some victims remain hospitalized.

Coats, clothes, shoes and children's toys were collected for the victims over the weekend. The community came together Monday night to pay tribute to the victims.

P.S. 205 in Belmont has started a fund to help those affected by the fire. So far, it has received nearly $15,000.
