DSNY turns up heat on excess snow

The city Department of Sanitation has a secret weapon for removing excess snow -- a sauna-like device that can filter out trash and debris and send water down a special sewer for purification.
Each of the devices can melt between 60 and 120 tons of snow an hour, producing 240 gallons of water a minute.
There are five currently in use, but the city has 36 altogether.
One in East New York is helping dispose of snow from several neighboring Brooklyn communities.
