Several tenants of the apartment buildings at 911 and 923 Walton Ave. rallied against their landlord Wednesday over claims their rent was raised for repairs that were never made.
Leaks, vermin, mold and peeling paint are just some of the complaints listed by the tenants in the buildings. They say the work that has been done in the building is for quick fixes, like painting over mold and patching ceilings.
“There are currently 23 Class C violations which should be repaired within 24 hours, and they're not fixed," says Urban Justice Center attorney Greg Baltz.
Residents say their landlord recently raised their rent claiming major capital improvements had been made, which would allow the landlord to raise stabilized-rent based on costs associated with repairs and improvements.
“We need communication with management,” said Betty Travieso, who has been a resident in one of the Walton Avenue buildings for over 10 years. “[The landlord] needs to come and know his tenants and know how we are living.”
Resident Juanita Vazquez says the mold in her apartment is so strong that it is difficult to breathe in the shower.
The tenants say they plan to take their concerns to housing court Friday with the help of Community Action for Safe Apartments.
News 12 has reached out to landlord Mark Neiman for comment but has not yet received a response.
