EAST TREMONT -

A heavy police presence marked the Prospect Avenue block where authorities say officers fatally shot a man armed with a knife Monday night.

Investigators say police were called to Prospect Avenue for reports of a possible stabbing. They say two officers arrived and found a man with a knife chasing another man.

Authorities say the officers repeatedly told the suspect to drop the knife.

Instead, he turned toward them, knife in hand. They opened fire.

The man was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspect had actually stabbed anyone.
