Belmont Community Day Care hosts ‘Hare Hog Day’

More than 100 preschoolers celebrated a different form of Groundhog Day at the Belmont Community Day Care Friday.
Friday marked the fifth annual “Hare Hog Day” at the day care. Seven classes of children participated in the event.
Each class was assigned its own pet rabbit or guinea pig that would take on the role of the groundhog and predict whether there would be six more weeks of winter or an early spring.
The children are responsible for caring for the many animals in the building year-round. Teachers say caring for the animals teaches the students about empathy and the responsibility of owning a pet.
Teachers say the day care’s rabbits and guinea pigs have predicted correctly for the past four years.
