Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello met with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Bronx President Ruben Diaz Jr. and other officials Saturday on a visit to the Bronx as hurricane recovery efforts on the storm-battered island.
The event underscored the close cooperation and support that New York has offered Puerto Rico amid the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.
"The first plane, the first help came from New York, so on behalf of the people of Puerto Rico -- gracias, New York," Gov. Rossello said.
Cuomo says the outpouring from New Yorkers was unlike anything he's ever seen -- but added that he's "ashamed" that the United States has failed to help Puerto Rico recover faster.
The two governors both called on Congress to provide more funding for the storm-battered Island -- about a third of which still remains without power following last year's storm.
But tensions ran high at the event at Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education, as protesters clashed with police and some criticized Rossello for not doing enough. One attendee says the efforts are "just for show," adding, "He has not been standing up for the Puerto Rican people with what's going on in Puerto Rico."
Still, many who attended say both governors have proven themselves to be committed to recovery efforts.
