News 12 New Jersey viewers had strong but mixed reactions to a Kane In Your Corner investigation that looked into how New Jersey handles late child support payments.
New Jersey is one of two states that will automatically suspend the driver’s license of a person who has fallen behind on child support payments. Four men are now suing the state of New Jersey because they say that the policy hurts the children by making it hard for the parent to keep working.
Many News 12 viewers called, emailed or posted on social media about the story after it aired.
“I’m 100 percent for it,” said Marleen from Union City. “If you pay your child support on time, it would not be a problem.”
Viewer Robert said, “They do need to scale back these laws some. I mean, sure, crack down on the guy who owes $10,000, but the guy who owes a week or two?”
“I met a few [women] in my day that used the childcare check for partying. I also hear about deadbeat dads. I don't know what the fix is but taking away a license isn't it,” said viewer Anthony.
And many viewers just said that it all comes down to personal responsibility.
“Gotta make them pay one way or another,” said viewer Joanne. “This would be like a ‘get out of jail free card’ for not paying. Suspend it. Fine them. Whatever it takes.”
