University Heights scrapyard goes up in flames

A University Heights scrapyard went up in flames Monday evening.
The fire started around 5:30 p.m. along West Fordham Road. About a dozen fire departments responded and battled the flames for more than an hour. Firefighters say the biggest issue was the low visibility and thick, dark smoke that could be seen from miles away.
An employee says the yard contains items like air conditioners, refrigerators, generators and wires -- many of which are flammable.
The yard's owner says five employees were present at the time and that no one was injured.
Less than 24 hours later, it seemed as if business at the yard had returned to normal. People were seen dropping off unwanted appliances and other materials, while mounds of burned bed frames and twisted aluminum still remained.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
