#N12BX: Alberto Carvalho declines offer as NYC schools chancellor

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Miami-Dade school Superintendent Alberto Carvalho Thursday declined Mayor Bill de Blasio's offer to become the next New York City public schools chancellor.

Carvalho made the announcement during a press conference Thursday less than 24-hours after de Blasio picked him for the job.

Carvalho has led Miami-Dade County Public Schools since 2008. He was named the national superintendent of the year in 2014.

"Alberto Carvalho is a world-class educator with an unmatched track record of success," de Blasio said in a statement. "I am very confident that our extensive, national search has found New York City the best person to lead the nation's largest school system into the future."

Shortly after Carvalho's announcement, many people turned to social media to express their confusion and frustration with his decision to back down.

Chancellor Carmen Farina is expected to retire in the coming weeks. Carvalho was going to be her replacement.
