Concerns linger as committee OKs Jerome Ave. revitalization plan

THE BRONX -

While a plan to revitalize the Jerome Avenue corridor is one step closer to becoming a reality, some community members say they still have some concerns.

The city’s Land Use Committee passed a rezoning plan aimed at revitalizing a 2-mile stretch mostly along Jerome Avenue.

The plan calls for more affordable housing in the neighborhood as well as a number of improvements, including better parks and lighting along the streets.

Dozens of people concerned about the plan rallied in the streets last summer saying it would create a gentrified neighborhood.

City officials say they hope that transforming the area will give residents a better quality of life.

"You can only do that in a successful way if you're already investing in the housing that's here as well as other neighborhood amenities,” says Michael Parkinson, of the Department of City Planning.

The plan still needs to be approved by the full City Council. The vote is set to occur March 21.
