Court psychologist: Accused EMT killer unfit to stand trial

Posted: Updated:
THE BRONX -

A man accused of fatally running over an EMT with her own ambulance in the Bronx has been found unfit to stand trial, according to a court psychologist.

Yadira Arroyo's family, her local EMS union and supporters were hoping Jose Gonzalez, 25, would spend the rest of his life behind bars for his role in the death of the 14-year FDNY EMS veteran.

Arroyo and her partner were responding to an emergency call on March 16, 2017 when they spotted Gonzalez riding on the back of their ambulance.

When Arroyo got out of the vehicle to confront him, police say Gonzalez, who was high on drugs at the time,  jumped into the driver's seat and placed the ambulance in reverse, backing over Arroyo.

Arroyo died at the hospital. The 44-year-old was the mother of five boys and a beloved figure at Station 26 where she worked.  Arroyo's union, EMS Local 2507, called Tuesday's decision a "setback" but vowed to fight for justice on her behalf.

Published reports show Gonzalez has a long arrest record and a history of mental illness.

The Bronx District Attorney's Office has until April 13 to either accept or challenge the ruling.
