The Garden City Park family of a woman who was killed by a hit-and-run driver is offering $20,000 of their own money to help catch her killer.
Police say Catarina Lima was trying to cross Nassau Boulevard just south of Seventh Street on Jan. 30. She was then hit by a northbound car and dragged about 30 feet.
Detectives say she was noticed by another vehicle that stopped and made sure she wasn’t struck again.
Her daughter, Samantha Strong, says her mother had been out at a shopping center and was just blocks from her home. Lima, 72, was already a grandmother to three. Strong and her husband were just about to tell her that another grandchild was on the way.
“Our family needs some closure,” says Strong. “We need to know that you know what you’ve done and that you’re sorry about it.”
Police say they have been asking mechanics if they remember working on a car with front-end damage where the owner didn't go through insurance.
There was already a $5,000 reward being offered by police in the case. The $25,000 will go to anyone who gives information that leads to an arrest.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
