Judge denies order of protection for school stabbing suspect

Lawyers for the teen accused of killing a classmate and injuring another asked a judge for an order of protection against the victim's family Monday.

Abel Cedeno, 18, faces charges of manslaughter, assault and criminal possession of a weapon in the September 2017 stabbing death of 15-year-old Matthew McCree. Cedeno also allegedly stabbed Adriane Laboy, 16, who survived.

Attorney Robert Feldman says he fears McCree's relatives may kill his client.

The dead teen's brother and another person were charged in a separate robbery case after allegedly trying to find out from a witness where Cedeno lives.

The judge says he does not have the authority to issue a restraining order in connection with that robbery case.

"They are gang members, and they are going to kill Abel Cedeno," Feldman claims.

McCree's mother says her son and other family members are not gang members.

Cedeno's lawyers say he was acting in self-defense. They accuse the victims of bullying him and taunting him over his sexuality.

The next court date is June 25 for a hearing about whether information taken from Cedeno's cellphone can be used during trial.
