Flatbush mural tells the story of hundreds of locals

Artist Katie Merz and her boyfriend spent a month and a half putting together a new mural dedicated to Brooklyn that she says started with looking at the history of the borough.
She used people on the street for inspiration. The mural quickly took a life of its own in Flatbush.
The mural contains hundreds of symbols — among them a crown for Kings County. She says many others are nods to each unique story she heard.
Merz says she finished most of the work in November, but now she's trying to fill in some blank spots.
