Mother, daughter surprise reunion warms hearts at Bronx nursing home

A 95-year-old woman received an early Mother's Day gift when she was reunited with her 68-year-old daughter who she had not seen in 5 years.
Lydia Cardona, who lives in Puerto Rico, says she had not seen her mother Josefina Medina, who lives in ArchCare nursing home at San Vicente de Paúl in the Bronx, due to both economic and health-related issues.
Cardona says after Hurricane Maria hit the island and left her home without power, phone service or running water, she soon realized she may never be able to see her mother again.
Staff say Medina is bound to a wheelchair and could never make the journey back to Puerto Rico to visit her daughter so after Maria hit, she helplessly watched the news, looking for any information on the status of her daughter.
Fortunately, the two were reunited Thursday with the help of the ArchCare nursing facility who funded the effort completely.
Staff at the facility say they are hosting a special Mother's Day event for residents and their families this weekend.
Both Cardona and her mother Medina say they have some catching up to do.
