Heavy downpours and strong gusts of wind brought down trees and made for treacherous travel around the Bronx Tuesday night.
Two trees fell on Bronx Park East, blocking the sidewalk and partially blocking the street in front of apartment buildings. One uprooted tree -- as tall as some of the surrounding buildings -- fell into a second tree.
The falling trees hit a van. Witnesses say it happened around 4:45 p.m. and caused a traffic jam. No injuries were reported. Parks Department workers spent hours removing branches and clearing the street.
Residents were urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
Earlier in the day, residents were enjoying the warm weather and sunny skies on the City Island waterfront before the storms hit. Some people said they made sure to get out early before spending the rest of the night indoors.
