5 hospitalized after Grand Concourse crash

An elderly woman and four other people were hospitalized after a car crash Friday morning on Grand Concourse.
The woman in her 70s was struck around 11 a.m. by a car while using a walker to cross Grand Concourse at 175th Street. A silver Mercedes first hit a parked car farther down the road. As it fled that scene, it hit another car, knocking that second car into the woman.
Five people in total were taken to two hospitals. The elderly woman was in critical condition.
The suspected driver of the Mercedes was apprehended at the scene.
The area is part of a city Department of Transportation project that's meant to enhance safety and quality of life for pedestrians and motorists.
"We take these severe crashes very seriously, and through our Vision Zero efforts, there is a plan for that intersection to be redesigned and receive an additional crosswalk," the DOT said in a statement.
There were zero fatalities on the Grand Concourse in 2016 and 2017.
