A Holbrook street was renamed Sunday to honor a FDNY captain and Sept. 11 first responder from Long Island.
Vincent Ungaro died in October 2016 from Sept. 11-related cancer.
Islip officials and fellow firefighters gathered Sunday to rename the intersection of Inverness Road and Broadway Avenue to honor Ungaro's life and legacy.
Ungaro was gardening at home in Holbrook on Sept. 11 when he heard what happened at the towers. Even though his car broke down on the Long Island Expressway, he hitchhiked the rest of the way to help in the response efforts.
The 30-year FDNY veteran also made several trips to Washington, D.C. to advocate for Sept. 11 first responders who developed health problems.
His family says he remained positive even on his death bed weeks before his daughter’s wedding.
