A fireman who lost his life on September 11 is being honored by many thanks to his mother.
Irene Smith, of Bed-Stuy, started the "Firefighter Leon W. Smith Jr. Foundation" to help younger generations achieve their dreams of going to school.
"I don't want anyone to ever forget my son," Irene Smith said. "That's why I have this scholarship named after him so they would never forget him."
The foundation held a fundraising event on Saturday to celebrate the achievements of 10 students who were able to earn their degrees.
Three additional scholarship recipients will be graduating this year.
