#N12Primaries: Rep. Engel hopes to defend 16th District seat

Rep. Eliot Engel is a Democrat and former teacher who represents the state's 16th Congressional District, which covers northern parts of the Bronx and southern Westchester County.
Engel was first elected in 1988. Now he's a ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
The Bronx native supports Medicare and has opposed cuts to Social Security. 
He was also among the lawmakers who helped craft the Affordable Care Act under President Barack Obama.
