The intersection of East 181st Street and Ryder Avenue was renamed Thursday in honor of slain NYPD Detective Miosotis Familia on the one-year anniversary of her death.
The 48-year-old mother of three was shot in the head while sitting in her mobile command unit just after midnight on July 5, 2017.
Hundreds of law enforcement members, city officials, family and friends came together to dedicate the intersection outside the 46th Precinct, where Familia served for 12 years. Through tears, her oldest daughter Genesis spoke about her mother's service to the city.
"A hero is someone who makes it their duty to put the lives of others before their own," she said.
On Wednesday night, a candlelight vigil was held at the corner that now bears Familia's name.
