Officials, housing advocates and tenant leaders stood on the steps of City Hall Tuesday to blast the federal government for not investing in public housing.
News 12 has covered the conditions inside multiple New York City Housing Authority complexes, where there were leaky roofs, peeling paint, no heat and unreported lead paint.
Officials say they want a $70 billion investment added to Congress' infrastructure plan to fix what they call deep-seated issues that are spiraling out of control.
Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced a new campaign that he says would figure out just how widespread the lead problem is in NYCHA apartments. It came after elected officials said a report showed that more than 800 children living in public housing over the past few years had been exposed to dangerous lead levels.
Elected officials say it will be an uphill battle to get the $70 billion for NYCHA repairs. They urge people to get out and vote come November.
