State officials issue clinging jellyfish warning

New Jersey officials have issued a warning about an invasive and potentially painful species of jellyfish in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection says that at least 40 clinging jellyfish were found in the north-central Barnegat Bay on Monday – the bayside of Island Beach State Park.
Clinging jellyfish range in size from that of a dime to the size of a quarter.
Doctors say that the sting of a clinging jellyfish can cause severe pain, cramping and in some cases, hospitalization. Health officials say that if a person is stung they should put white vinegar on the area, rinse it with salt water and then remove the tentacles using gloves or a towel.
DEP officials are asking anyone who may see a clinging jellyfish to take a picture of it and send it to them, along with location information.
