Officials say traces of legionella bacteria were found in the water supply at Jacobi Medical Center.
News 12 sources say the risk to patients, staff and visitors is very low. They say a routine test found low levels of the bacteria that is often found in liquids.
When aspirated by those with weak immune systems, it may lead to Legionnaire’s disease.
The hospital has restricted water use and has brought in bottled water as an alternative. It is also installing new water filters in its showers.
The hospital said in a statement that it is currently working with the department of health to treat and monitor the water system.
Jacobi Medical Center is a municipal hospital operated by NYC Health + Hospitals.
