The municipal building is located in Lower Manhattan and is easily recognizable for its grand entrance but what it houses may surprise you.
Justin Rivers from Untapped Cities says the gateway was supposed to be a segue to a larger terminal hub for a subway that never got built.
Rivers says building plans got put on hold because laborers were needed to fight in WWI.
Behind the municipal building a Grand Central-like terminal was going to be built.
A subway station was built within the foundation of a building but it was never used.
The vacant subway station is found on Chambers Street.
Counters, where commuters could purchase tickets, are now left abandoned.
