Montefiore Medical Center’s emergency room wait times are twice the national average, according to a new report.
The New York Daily News quoted nurses, who described the waiting room in the ER as being like a "refugee camp."
According to federal government data, emergency room patients at Montefiore Medical Center wait more than an hour to been seen by a health care worker.
The data reveals the long wait times are double the nation average of just under half an hour.
Bronx Councilman Ritchie Torres says Montefiore Medical Center is the largest recipient of Medicaid dollars in the city and state and the public deserves an explanation if the hospital is understaffed.
"Montefiore has a practice of relegating Medicaid recipients to crowded and cramped hallways where the risk of infection is much higher, and relegating patients to hallways stripping them of patient care and privacy. There's no privacy for toilets, and private interviews. Montefiore is the largest recipient of Medicaid dollars throughout New York City and New York State. The city has such a vested interest in insuring that Montefiore manages city dollars responsibly," Torres says.
Montefiore Medical Center released a statement saying in part, "We cannot speak to where these staffing numbers come from but they do not match ours. We continuously monitor our staffing levels to provide the best, safest care for our patients.”
