New York City Office of Immigrant Affairs is continuing to help asylum seekers who are victims of domestic violence despite a new ruling from the Trump administration about who qualifies to become one.

Under U.S. Attorney Jeff Sessions, the federal government now has the ability to limit how foreign individuals who are victims of domestic violence obtain asylum status in the U.S.

The New York City Office of Immigrant Affairs in Brooklyn says it's a major crisis.

"For many decades, being a woman who is threatened by domestic violence by an abuser cannot leave the relationship according to a particular country's laws," says Maribel Hernandez Rivera of the NYC Office of Immigrant Affairs.

Brooklyn Legal Services, a division of Legal Services NYC, says it will continue to provide legal, civil, immigration advocacy and counseling to survivors of domestic violence and their children who are seeking asylum in the U.S.
