Some constituents in the 21st Assembly District said a mailer sent by Assemblyman Brian Curran was a thinly veiled effort to boost his re-election campaign at the taxpayers' expense.
In the mailer, the Republican lawmaker touts his fight for ethics reform in Albany by calling for term limits for legislative leaders. However, Susan Brockmann, of Lynbrook, called the flyer “unethical.”
“It's ugly and…it's a hackneyed way of reaching voters,” she said. “It's not ethical, ironically. Since [the mailer] is about ethics. It really seems unethical to me.”
Assemblyman Curran issued a written statement to News 12 Long Island saying he didn't do anything wrong when he sent out the flyer.
"All mail sent out by members of the Assembly goes through a rigorous approval process by the Assembly majority (Democrats) before it is allowed out the door. We followed all legislative and election guidelines and policies, and paid a strict adherence to all deadlines," he said in the statement.
New York Public Interest Research Group Executive Director Blair Horner said the mailer should be prohibited.
“As soon as you’ve announced you're up for re-election, the door should be closed in terms of taxpayer-funded direct mail to your constituents,” said Horner.
News 12 reached out to a spokesperson for the Assembly to verify whether Assemblyman Curran's mailer was approved by the Assembly Majority.
