Vote 2018: 5th District GOP candidates

Three Republicans are looking to fill Connecticut's 5th Congressional District seat currently held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty.
The 5th District is considered among the most competitive in the country. Nearly half of its voters are independents. A Democrat has held the seat for the past 11 years.
Former Meriden Mayor Manny Santos has received the endorsement of Republican Party insiders. But also in the running is businessman Rich DuPont and retired college professor Ruby Corby O'Neill.
All three say they would stand up to President Donald Trump if necessary, but say they would also welcome him to campaign in the district.
On immigration, the trio says they want a tighter border but also want Congress to pass some version of DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.
Esty opted to not run for re-election after a scandal erupted over how she handled a staffer accused of abusing a colleague in her office.
The primary will be held Aug. 14, with the general election to follow on Nov. 6.
