PELHAM BAY -

A woman was attacked and strangled by a man who followed her inside of her Bronx apartment building stairwell, police say.

The incident happened on July 5, inside an apartment building near Buhre and Mahan avenues around 9:05 p.m.

Police say the suspect followed the 24-year-old woman into her apartment building and began to smother her face inside the stairwell.

The victim told police the suspect used his hands to smother her by covering her mouth and nose so she could not breathe.

The woman fell to the ground and was able to fight back before the suspect ran out of the building.
