Soundview tenants complain of poor conditions, lack of gas

Tenants at 1210 Stratford Ave. in Soundview say they're fed up with what they call deplorable conditions and a landlord who won't do enough to fix them.
They say have been dealing with leaky ceilings, a broken security system, peeling paint, an unreliable elevator and stoves that haven't had gas since November.
The tenants say their landlord provided them with hot plates last year, but they say it's not enough. They also say their broken front door results in homeless people spending nights on the floor and using the hallways as restrooms.
The city Department of Buildings has a complaint list for the building that tallies in the hundreds. It has just over 100 violations from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
The DOB says the elevator, which is not currently scheduled to be fixed, failed two inspections in July. It says gas service was cut off by a utility company due to an outside leak. And supposedly unsafe gas work was conducted in February, but the gas remains off.
There's also a standing partial vacate order on some basement apartments believed to be created illegally.
Residents say they're holding up their end of the lease and want their landlord to step up and take responsibility.
News 12 called the landlord's office, explained the conditions and asked for a response. But the person who answered hung up and did not answer subsequent calls.
