NEW YORK -

Hundreds of Catholic priests in Pennsylvania have been accused of sex abuse within the church in a new scandal.

The latest scandal of sex abuse in the church has shed light on new cases in New York City where big payouts are being made to the victims

The New York Post reports the Archdiocese of New York has paid out close to $60 million to 278 sex abuse victims in the past two years alone.

A former student of Cardinal Hayes recently claimed to have been molested back in the 1980s.

The legal compensation is part of the Archdiocese's Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program.

Last year, the New York Times named 8 Brooklyn priests accused of sex abuse.

In early August of 2018, a report from a Pennsylvania grand jury revealed over 300 priests had abused more than 1,000 children in the state for decades.

Since then, investigations have been opened around the world.

Many cases are beyond the statute of limitations, however.
