The city will invest $600,000 into the CUNY Childcare Initiative.
City Council speaker Corey Johnson says the program is intended to help college students with children earn their degrees.
The CUNY Childcare Initiative will provide day care services, academic tutoring and other programs for eligible students.
The program is available at 18 colleges under CUNY.
Officials estimate 1,500 infants and toddlers will benefit from the program.
CUNY day care centers will now have extended hours and be open during the weekend.
Public Advocate Letita James has called for more funding and more spots in CUNY day cares.
