Pair charged in connection to woman's death and dismemberment

A man and woman are facing charges in connection with the death and dismemberment of a 25-year-old woman whose remains were found in two Bronx parks.

Police say 31-year-old Daquan Wheeler and 30-year-old Ciara Martinez were arrested last night in the death of Lisa Velasquez.

Investigators say Velasquez had made a 911 call about a domestic dispute on Longfellow Avenue back on Aug. 22. The dispute involved Wheeler and Martinez regarding a child they share together.

According to police sources, Martinez had called Velasquez to tell her she needed help because she got into a fight with Wheeler, her boyfriend. Sources say Velasquez arrived, witnessed the couple arguing and called the police, but Wheeler left shortly after she arrived.

The NYPD says they responded to the home, but Wheeler had already left.

However, officials say Wheeler returned to the home and Velasquez was attacked with a hammer. Authorities say the two acted together in bludgeoning Velasquez and later dismembering and dumping her remains.

Her remains were found near Crotona Park and in Barreto Point Park.

Wheeler and Martinez face multiple charges, including murder and concealment of a human corpse.

The pair will remain in the custody of the court. Their attorneys say they are both willing to testify. They will return to court Sept. 25

Both of the suspects have criminal histories. Court officials say Wheeler was out on parole for an attempted murder conviction, and Martinez has a history of jumping bail, along with a prior robbery charge.

Velasquez’s family is planning a closed casket funeral.
