HUNTS POINT -

A warehouse worker died at the Hunts Point warehouse Thursday in an apparent accident, officials say.

The incident happened at the Chef's Warehouse Food Distribution Center at 240 Food Center Drive around 1 a.m.

The 43-year-old man suffered head trauma and was transported to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police believe the man was operating a forklift when his head was crushed between the side of the forklift and a metal shelf.

Company officials say they are heartbroken by the tragic accident.

In a statement, Chef's Warehouse wrote "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this most difficult time. We are committed to providing all our employees with a workplace environment that values safety above all else."

The man's identity is being withheld pending the notification of his family.

A source tells News 12 the incident appears to be accidental.

Chef's Warehouse is cooperating with the investigation.
