Heavy rain causes flooding, damage at NYCHA building

Local officials are calling for action after heavy rain this week caused major issues at a Bronx NYCHA building.
Damp walls and missing ceiling tiles at the Melrose Mott Haven Senior Houses have left residents fed up. The flooding has extended damage from rooms to the computer lab and bingo room. The cafeteria is also suffering, where a huge plastic bag is set up to collect rain water.
New York City Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr. and state Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo condemned the damages, saying the houses have become a health hazard for seniors.
"The particles that may be in the air from the ceiling tiles, and who knows what kind of contaminated water is coming down and exposing these seniors," said Salamanca.
NYCHA says their staff has been on site since last week working to complete repairs as soon as possible. Arroyo says the work hasn't been done fast enough.
"This didn't happen yesterday, it's been happening for weeks and weeks and weeks," says Arroyo.
