The town of East Hampton has been trying to rectify the problem of an eroding beach in Montauk since Superstorm Sandy, but Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc says the beach may face more issues during this storm season.
The Army Corp of Engineers aimed to solve, or at least slow down, the erosion issue along the beachfront by constructing a 3,000-foot revetment with sandbags underneath an artificial dune. The project also aimed to protect the foundations of the major hotels and construction on the beachfront.
East Hampton is responsible for maintaining the artificial dune.  Van Scoyoc says there was concern that the effects of Hurricane Florence could expose the sandbags.
“We’ve seemed to have weathered that pretty well right now, but we’re under no illusions that at some point during the storm season this winter, the bags will likely be exposed again,” he told News 12.
The town announced this week a plan to spend $200,000 to hire consultants to draft a solution to the erosion problem on the beaches. There will be a public discussion about the issue in November.
