Community members in Soundview joined forces Saturday to pick up litter in the neighborhood.
Volunteers rummaged through rocks along the shoreline where the Bronx River meets the Long Island Sound in an effort to find and dispose of trash.
Among other items, volunteers found a used fishing rod, an old cellphone, a hookah device and what appears to be a small religious item.
Michelle Luebke, of the Bronx River Alliance, tallied 370 pieces of discarded foam and 193 pieces of plastic this year.
“What people don't really understand is that when they're eating the fish they're actually eating the plastic and Styrofoam the fish consumed,” says Luebke.
Volunteers kept track of the kinds of trash they found in what they call “Project Waste.”
