Albanians keep culture alive in the Bronx

BELMONT -

The Albanian American Society says it's keeping its culture alive as more people move to the Bronx.

The society has been based in the Bronx for the past 25 years. It says up to 100,000 Albanians currently live in the Bronx.

Founder Esad Rizai has been in the Bronx for 54 years after his father brought him over from Albania.

Besides celebrating major Albanian holidays and inviting the public, the society says its goal is to celebrate and promote being Albanian-American.

The foundation has hosted students from Kosova and showed them Little Albania and helped newcomers from their region who moved to the Bronx.

Residents can find Albanian food at restaurants like Cakor and can buy access to Albanian TV channels from home at a shop on Arthur Avenue.

The Albanian American Society Foundation's next big event will be Nov. 28 to celebrate Albanian Independence Day.
