Gloria Estefan was on hand Tuesday to check out the hydroponic farm at Dewitt Clinton campus in Bedford Park.
Estefan sang to the plants and shared her love of nature.
The hydroponic farm is a project through Teens for Food Justice. Students with the program learn to become 21st century farmers, using science and technology to grow food and even eat it. The food grown at the farm was used recently for a gala in Manhattan.
The program is a public-private partnership and is currently only in New York City. Estefan and model/actress Karolina Kurkova want to help it expand and bring it to the Miami school system.
"I am really impressed to see what the school has done here and the students, and I think it is an amazing opportunity to look into the future,” said Estefan.
"I really think this should be available to all the schools, you know, all over the country, and for kids this should be part of school," said Kurkova.
Estefan says she likes the idea because her mother was a teacher, adding that she is on board with anything involving education and making life better.
