A Bronx hospital has earned a national accreditation in cancer care.
NYC Health + Hospital/Jacobi earned an three-year accreditation for its oncology program.
The silver level commendation means that more than 25 percent of its nursing staff is certified in cancer care, as well as improved technology and additional funding for cancer research.
The hospital says the new accreditation will enable it to provide a higher standard in care for cancer patients.
Ramon Murphy, 61, visits the hospital once a month for chemotherapy.
“It's 15 minutes,” he says. “I do my treatment and go back home. It's easy for me.”
"We are treating patients just as good as any other hospital with the same designation, and that includes not just doctors and nurses, but also includes support services, patient navigators, psychologists, it means that all of the doctors in surgery are certified," says Dr. Tarek Elrafei.
Doctors say the new accreditation will also improve survival rates.
