Security increased at Hostos-Lincoln Academy of Science following stabbing

MELROSE -

Students were met with increased security at Hostos-Lincoln Academy of Science Thursday after a stabbing in the school left one teen in the hospital and another under arrest.

Police say it happened in the school’s cafeteria during lunchtime Wednesday.

The fight apparently broke out over social media. School security tells News 12 a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were arguing over a Snapchat post from the weekend just after 11 a.m.

That's when they say she spit at him, he swung at her and she ultimately pulled out a box cutter, stabbing him in the right shoulder.

The campus where the incident happened houses four schools with children in grades six through 12 and does not scan students. However, the Department of Education said it will be beefing up security.

"NYPD and EMS immediately responded to an incident this afternoon, and an individual was transported to the hospital in stable condition," says NYC DOE Press Secretary Miranda Barbot.

"Weapons of any kind have absolutely no place in our schools, and we are adding more security measures to this building."

More than a dozen officers arrived at the school around 6:15 a.m.

Also, four NYPD vans pulled up at the school with officers and equipment inside.

A bag scanner, metal detectors, tables and crowd control ropes and posts were all unloaded out of the back of one of those vehicles.

Police tell News 12 the girl was arrested, and the boy was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in stable condition.
