A South Bronx organization is helping residents shed unwanted pounds, not by dieting, but by simple life changes.
According to health officials, the South Bronx has the highest obesity rate in the entire state.
To combat problems associated with obesity like diabetes, members of the organization Health People in Mott Haven hope their weight loss journey will inspire others to make lifestyle changes.
Through an intensive diabetes prevention course, participants develop an action plan, learn about portion control and how to fit exercise into their daily lives.
Loretta Fleming lost over 100 pounds in three years through the program after she was told by her doctor that she was at risk for diabetes.
“I got scared so I know there was something I had to do. That's what caused me to get on track about losing weight,” says Fleming.

Health People director Dr. Chris Norwood says her peer educators who provide outreach in the community on average have lost 30 pounds through the diabetes prevention and management programs.
