Man accused in University Heights shootout with police claims he is a victim

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -

The man accused of being involved in a shootout with police that injured two innocent bystanders is facing serious charges.

Edwin Castillo faced a judge while standing on crutches Friday. He faces attempted murder charges.

Castillo claims he was injured by police gunfire during a shootout in University Heights after police say he was involved in a drug robbery.

Castillo's attorney says there is video evidence showing Castillo was not actively involved in the shootout and that he was instead a victim. However, the lawyer says he has not reviewed the tape himself.

Also in attendance for the court appearance was Irene Perez, one of the two people shot by police when caught in the crossfire. Her focus is not on Castillo.

"What about the police officer who shot 27 times recklessly?" says Perez's attorney, Sanford Rubenstein. "We are calling on the police commissioner and the police department to conduct disciplinary proceedings."
