Westchester Square community protests plans to bring homeless shelter to area

Posted: Updated:
WESTCHESTER SQUARE -

Westchester Square residents are speaking out against plans to bring a homeless shelter into their community.

Neighbors gathered at the corner of St. Peters and Glebe avenues on Saturday to protest a new 40-bed homeless shelter program for the youth.

They say the neighborhood needs other services and are worried the new facility will bring crime with it.

"We need services for schools for the kids, for after school programs," says Kendra Sivadonis-Macmillin, a mother of three. "There's hardly any in the area.”

Covenant House is the organization that plans on moving into the building works at providing homeless youth with housing and steering them in a positive direction. The community says the organization's intent is in the right place but are worried it could have a negative impact on crime in the community.

Organizers say they will be rallying every Saturday until the project is reversed.
